Capernaum Is Condemned More Than Sodom
In Matthew 11, Jesus says it will be more tolerable for Sodom in the judgment than for Capernaum — his own ministry base.
Matthew 11:20–24 contains a series of woes on Galilean towns where miracles had been performed: Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum. Of Capernaum: 'And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.' Capernaum was Jesus's operational base (Matthew 4:13 calls it 'his own city'). The most severe condemnation in this passage falls on the town most familiar with him.

Correction Note
Source verses corrected 2026-06-19: Matthew 4:13 moved to context_verses. Matthew 4:13 is narrator establishing Capernaum as base, not red-letter speech. Condemnation in Matthew 11:23-24 remains. Core claim survives.
