He Used 'This Generation' as an Accusation
Jesus used the phrase 'this generation' as a term of indictment — and he did it at least ten times across the four gospels.
Across all four gospels, Jesus returns repeatedly to the phrase 'this generation' (Greek: genea hautē) — and almost every use carries a tone of accusation or condemnation. He called it 'an evil and adulterous generation' that seeks a sign (Matthew 12:39; 16:4), an 'unbelieving and perverse generation' (Matthew 17:17; Luke 9:41), and charged it with the blood of all the prophets (Luke 11:50–51; Matthew 23:36). In Mark 8:12, he sighs deeply and declares that no sign will be given 'unto this generation' — the phrase functions as a formal refusal, as if addressing a condemned body. In Mark 13:30 and its parallels, he uses 'this generation shall not pass' as a temporal marker of prophetic urgency. What makes this pattern notable is the consistency of its rhetorical function: 'this generation' is never a neutral chronological marker in his speech. It is always either a target of judgment, a witness to condemnation, or the outer limit of a warning. He never uses 'this generation' to praise, include, or invite. The phrase is his term for collective human failure in the present moment — always indicting, never affirming.

Every red-letter use of 'this generation' (genea hautē or equivalent) across the Synoptics carries accusatory, condemnatory, or prophetic-warning force. No instance uses the phrase positively or neutrally. The pattern holds across Matthew, Mark, and Luke; John does not contain the phrase in red-letter text.
Greek Note
Greek: genea hautē — 'this generation.' In the LXX and Second Temple literature, genea can carry a moral or corporate sense (a type of people), not only a biological cohort. Jesus's use appears to exploit this ambiguity: 'this generation' is both a temporal reference and a moral category.
