The Parable Never Explained
Of the 40+ parables attributed to Jesus, most were never explained — and he explained why.
Jesus explains two parables in the Synoptics in detail: the sower (Matthew 13:18–23) and the wheat and tares (Matthew 13:36–43). A few others receive brief glosses. The majority receive no explanation. When disciples ask why he speaks in parables (Matthew 13:10), Jesus gives a remarkable answer: he speaks in parables so that those outside will hear but not understand, citing Isaiah 6:9–10. This is the opposite of pedagogy: the parable is described as a mechanism of concealment, not clarity. The explanation is given only to insiders who 'have ears to hear.' The two explained parables are explicitly addressed to the disciples after the crowds leave.
